Education and Requirements: Surgeon
The road to become a surgeon is extremely long and rigourous. In order to start medical school, one needs to complete a Bachelor's degree and must complete undergraduate studies in the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Social Sciences, English, and Humaities. Something else that would help is volunteering in clinics and hospitals to shadow the day of a doctor. In order to apply to medical school , students are required to take the MCAT or Medical College Admission Test, turn in recommendation letters, and get interviewed by the admissions board. Students are required to go through 4 years of medical school. The first two years cover the basic topics of medicine such as anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. The last two years of medical school include rotations in various medical fields such as pediatrics, gynecology, and surgery. |
Education and Requirements: Cardiothoracic Surgeon
After completing medical school, a student must pass the United States Medical Licensing Exam in order to be fully certified to practice medicine. After this, the licensed student must go through a four to five year general residency program. When choosing to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, the student must complete two years of a fellowship program in this type of surgery. After the individual has completed this two years of the fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery, they are able to take the examination given by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. In order to become board-certified, the individual must pass the examination to be known as a cardiothoracic surgeon. |
